November 1, Portable Farms, Inc. relocated their corporate headquarters from Escondido, California, to San Diego, California, to better serve their local and International clients. At their Escondido headquarters, they hosted more than 4,500 people on personally guided tours through their 3 Portable Farms™ Aquaponics Systems growing organic vegetables and home-grown (Tilapia) fish.
Portable Farms, Inc. is in discussions with officials within the US Federal Government, and with the Government of Denmark, to provide food security through the use of their newly patented product, Portable Farms™ Aquaponics Systems. They are also speaking with State and Federal Prisons, schools, companies and non-profit organizations interested in feeding their people using this onsite food production facility.
Fact: The most pressing and important issue facing the world today is finding a way to create food security (access and availability) as evidenced by the food riots in 19 countries in 2007 and 2008.
Fact: Globally, 1 billion people are unable to secure a nutritionally adequate diet to keep them healthy and active, and 100 million of those people suffer from the consequences of Protein Energy Malnutrition (PEM). Childhood malnutrition claims the lives of 5 million children each year and leaves 200 million children with stunted growth. Projections by the Committee on Foreign Relations – United States Senate, claims, “By 2050, it is projected that population growth will require a doubling in farm output, yet growth rates in food production in some regions have been stagnated.” As countries become more affluent, the need for protein in their diet increases faster than the population or food production.
The PFAS is specifically designed to utilize currently unused urban or near-urban space to grow food as close to the consumer as possible. It is not designed to replace regular land-based agriculture. The main function of the PFAS is to produce nutritious food, on site, using a minimum of space, electricity, water and labor. Yearly production from a 10,000 square foot PFAS unit: 60,000 vegetables and 20,000 pounds of fish and only requires one person to operate.
*In a PFAS, there’s no need to water the plants, because a timed cycle is used to circulate the water throughout the system so the plants regularly receive a fresh supply of warm, nutrient-laden water. • No soil is necessary. The plants grow in gravel or river rock. • No weeding is necessary, just regular harvesting and replanting. • No pesticides, herbicides, fungicides or fertilizers are necessary. • No antibiotics or hormones are necessary. • The PFAS can be solar or wind powered.
